A taste of
rich history

Award-winning Krondorf holds a special place at the heart of Australia’s wine history and its most famous winemaking region: the Barossa Valley.

Meaning "crown village", Krondorf was established in 1847 by 121 Silesian settlers. They planted vines among small farms to make the wines they loved in the style they knew.

They also brought their Lutheran religion, surviving today in the beautiful old village churches gracing the region, and in the love, faith and hope ethos on the Krondorf label. Those words embody the spirit of optimism, adventure and innovation that inspired those founding families of Australian winemaking and lives on today in the latest exciting chapters of the Krondorf Wines success story.

Distinctive drops

Krondorf’s wines are highly awarded in the Barossa region as well as around the globe.

During the 1970s, the Krondorf name rose to prominence along with the Barossa itself, and in 1980, the Krondorf Cabernet Sauvignon 1979 won the prestigious Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy.

Krondorf has amassed more than 150 awards since 2020, including two trophies for the Old Salem Barossa Shiraz 2018 at the 2020 International Wine Challenge, a gold medal for the Founder’s View Barossa Shiraz 2020 at the 2021 New Zealand International Wine Show and the Grenache trophy for the Founder’s View Barossa Grenache 2020 at the 2022 National Wine Show.

The talent behind Krondorf’s most recent successes is Head Winemaker, Nick Badrice. One of the most impressive winemakers working in Australia today, Barossa-born Badrice pours his deep knowledge of the region and its fruit into wines that truly reflect their origins. His contemporary winemaking style is defined by careful sourcing and growing of fruit to best express each site, recognizing that a wine’s true character begins in the Barossa’s remarkable soil. Nick’s light touch creates wines consistently acclaimed for their balance and complexity, and his passion for the region and its history shines through, shaping a bright future for Krondorf Wines.

Krondorf wines are available in Dan Murphy's and BWS stores. You can also experience the Krondorf wines firsthand in the heart of the Barossa at the Krondorf Cellar Door & Wine Bar in Tanunda. Krondorf Founder’s View Barossa Shiraz 2020

A gold medal winner at the 2021 New Zealand International Wine Show, this rich Barossa Shiraz has intense plum and blackberry aromas, subtle cinnamon and nutmeg, supported by cedar and sandalwood for layered complexity and depth. From a vintage with a small but outstanding grape yield, meticulously selected parcels were aged in a combination of new and aged French and American oak, bringing balance and opulence.

Krondorf Founder’s View Barossa Grenache 2020

The Barossa is known to have some of the oldest continuous growing vines of Grenache in the world. This ruby-hued Grenache has bright, red cherry and raspberry fruit on the nose and focused red berry on the palate with pepper and spice notes. This wine’s lush mouthfeel and impressive complexity were achieved through gentle pressing and pumping processes during fermentation, before maturation in premium French oak barrels. The 2020 vintage took out the top award at the 2021 James Halliday Grenache Challenge, and the Grenache Trophy at the 2022 National Wine Show.

Displaying the fine structure Barossa Cabernets are renowned for, this deep red and purple hued wine has blackberry and blackcurrant aromas with leafy notes, concentrated cassis flavours and hints of choc mint and forest floor. Gentle pressing, maturation in French hogshead and blending from specific barrels all contribute to an exceptional balance of elegance and intensity. The 2020 vintage won gold at the 2021 New Zealand International Wine Show.

Krondorf Old Salem Barossa Shiraz

The Old Salem Vineyard is located in Stockwell, in the north western edge of the Barossa Valley. This vineyard featured 25-year-old vines that were planted on the site where the Old Salem Church once stood.

This highly awarded wine, a premium but well-priced drop, has just released its 2020 vintage as part of Krondorf’s annual vintage release in May. It’s highly coveted and is currently Krondorf’s most awarded wine.

Vinified and aged in new and second-year French and American oak, Old Salem Shiraz shows an intense nose of plum, blackberry spice and hints of menthol, with a rich palate holding concentrated flavours of plum, dark berries, dark chocolate and aniseed.

Old Salem Shiraz 2020 has been recognised for its perfect balance of intensity and brightness with 94 points from the Dan Murphy’s Wine Panel.

Perfect pairings

Beef chuck and pea pies

“Meat pies, tried and true and no-frills, occupy a very special part of my upbringing. Pairing a wine synonymous with Australian winemaking with a food central to Australian food culture was a no brainer. Shiraz, particularly from the Barossa, offers plenty of structure to help cut the richness of the pie’s meat filling, and also to cleanse and dry your palate after each sip.”

Mushroom Rarebit

“Mushrooms are incredibly versatile, and while this recipe doesn't have any meat it can be enjoyed by both meat eaters and vegetarians! This dish is all about the richness the ingredients bring – cheese, Dijon, Worcestershire, dark ale, all supported by the natural umami of field mushrooms. Old Salem Shiraz has the natural richness and power to meet the rarebit head on, while also having acidity to help cut through the natural fats of each individual component of the dish, making it complimentary and refreshingly rich at the same time.”

Garlic butter roast chicken

“Most people would automatically think of lighter styles of red wine such as Pinot Noir with roast chicken. For me, Chardonnay with a small amount of oak paired with roasted poultry can't be overlooked. The acidity, texture and mouthfeel from this chardonnay offers a contrasting balance to the savoury, richer and nuttier butter elements of Adam Liaw's Roast Chicken.”

Persian-style chickpea and lamb shank stew

“Lamb offers a very different contrast of flavours compared to other red proteins. The meat and fat are incredibly rich, almost like game. This cabernet sauvignon will be able to meet Danielle Alvarez's Persian Lamb Shank Stew in richness and flavour, but also provide structure and spice to accompany the spices used in the stew.”

Skillet Shawarma

“For me the simplest matches are typically always the best, and an uncomplicated dish like Lamb Shawarma demands an uncomplicated wine. Founder's View Grenache is bright and fresh, while still having both feet planted in structure and weight backed by the use of French oak. The perfect wine to accompany any form of red meat, while also not overpowering the dish.”
